  Dr. Tanner earned his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership and Cultural Studies from the University of Houston in Houston Texas, a Master of Education in School Administration and Supervision from Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and a Bachelor of Arts in History Education from Newberry College in Newberry South Carolina. In addition he holds a superintendent, principal and teacher certification.

Dr. Tanner has more than 20 years of higher education and public school experience including but not limited to the following, executive director and professor, education expert and consultant, parenting expert and consultant, urban middle and high school k-12 principal, district personnel director, and teacher. 

teaching background

    

As a professor, his academic support extends to students interested in leadership, education, and closing opportunity gaps. His classes are research based and exciting with topics such as analyzing the music of 2-Pac and others through the lens of various theories. He has also chaired or served as a member of more than 30 dissertation committees, taught more than 25 graduate courses, and has been awarded multiple grants, including a recent $350,000 grant from the National Science Foundation (NSF) to further his research on Developing Culturally Responsive STEM educators. 

Research agenda

 Dr. Tanner's research focuses on addressing the educational needs of historically under-served students. More specifically, my research agenda focuses on closing achievement gaps, retention, and graduation in P-16 settings, building strong parent/school partnerships, dispelling deficit model thinking, diversity, and culturally responsive leadership and teaching.
